Register for news updates“Passports” Launched For Great Southern Rail Trail
Rail Trails Australia’s (RTA) Eastern Victoria representative John Birrell attended the July launch of the Great Southern Rail Trail Activation Project. The launch was held at the location of a new art installation between Koonwarra and Meeniyan.
The project’s primary features include:
– nature appreciation and interpretation features (the 2km Koonwarra Biodiversity Walk)
– a new artwork installation
– a passport process to record up to 21 towns and locations which can be visited on the trail.
The Biodiversity Walk signage includes QR codes and recordings of local frog and bird species to make them more recognisable.
The unveiled artwork Outside In is a listening space inspired by the Strzelecki Gum. It includes timber salvaged from the Mirboo North storms, and was created by Victorian artist Christabel Wigley.
To support the passport element of the project, ink and stamp equipment will be housed at the 21 locations along the trail inside boxes which are cleverly-designed as miniature train carriages.
The project was made possible by funding of $100,000 from the Regional Development Victoria Fund and $40,000 from the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority.
