This week users of Queensland’s Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) benefited from the opening of the fourth new bridge to be reconstructed on the 24km trail section between Esk and Coominya.
This latest bridge is located 3.5km south of the old Esk Railway Station over Chasewater Creek and maintains the original timber construction of the former bridge. However it is a completely new build as only derelict elements of the original trestle bridge remained.
This final build removes the only remaining gully in this section. Previously, trail users had to negotiate the steep gullies which were occasionally the sites of accidents and mishaps.
Horse riders are still directed down the existing gully diversions, but walkers and cyclists now enjoy an easy transit across the gullies.
The trail managers, Department of Transport and Main Roads, must now have a skilled team of specialist bridge builders who have completely reconstructed their fourth bridge in as many years along this section of the trail!
The BVRT still remains, in essence, an adventure trail, but each new infrastructure build like this helps make the trail user experience safer and more pleasant.
