The Gippsland Plains Rail Trail committee of management is excited to launch 3 ‘Railway Dog’ sculptures along the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail on Sunday 22 March 2026.
The 3 Railway Dog sculptures are by local Cowwarr-based artist Jo Caminiti and were commission to reflect the 1935 story of a female red kelpie known as ‘Railway Dog’ who would jump aboard the guard’s van at Traralgon Railway yards to visit various parts of Gippsland. One day, the story goes, she missed the train and ran 30km along what is now the rail trail to catch up.
According to the committee of management, “Jo received donations of scrap metal and recycled materials such as retired farm machinery, tools, and old railway memorabilia to create 3 scrap-metal sculptures that will be located in Glengarry, Toongabbie and Cowwarr, depicting her epic run as described in a 1935 newspaper article.” The story was uncovered by the Gippsland History Group.
