The potential of the Pippita Trail has been identified and rapid initial progress has been made by a group of local cyclists. The enthusiastic group mapped and collated information on the forgotten route and presented this to Cumberland Council’s August 2020 meeting.
Council endorsed an investigation into the feasibility of the Pippita Trail and will consider its inclusion in a submission to the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program.
The Pippita Trail is a potential Rail Trail linking Lidcombe Railway Station to Edwin Flack Avenue in Sydney Olympic Park. The Trail would use a former goods railway line alignment that serviced an industrial area of Sydney, and which is now home to Sydney Olympic Park.
The Trail would also provide a connection to Wyatt Park, which includes a velodrome and aquatic centre and is being redeveloped to include new walking and cycling paths and a pedal park.
While just 3km in length, the Trail would provide a missing link in local green space pathways. It could form part of a cycling connection from Cooks River cycleway to the Parramatta River.
The Abattoirs Line opened as a branch off the Main Suburban railway line in 1911. Platforms and sidings on two loop lines serviced the and State Brickworks, cattle and sheep saleyards, the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation factory, Dairy Farmers and Ford. The lines progressively closed between 1984 and 1995.
The Olympic Park Line, built for the 2000 Olympic Games, traverses a similar route to the former Abattoirs Line. Facilities built for the Olympics now cover the old railway infrastructure beyond Edwin Flack Avenue. However, bridges from the earlier railway across Parramatta Road/Great Western Highway and the M4 motorway are still intact.
