Rail Trails Australia (RTA) regional representatives James Pearse and John Scott recently attended and contributed to the Wadandi Track Tourism Opportunities Forum.
Facilitated by Tourism WA, in partnership with the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure and industry stakeholders, the forum was held at the newly-opened Wayfinder Winery in Cowaramup.
The forum brought together over 40 participants from tourism, hospitality, local government and trail organisations, including RTA, to explore findings from the recently completed Tourism Opportunities Analysis.
The forum included presentations, panel discussions and case studies highlighting how rail trails can drive visitation, support local businesses and create connected visitor experiences.
James and John took part in the panel discussion, sharing insights on what makes an “iconic” rail trail and drawing inspiration from leading examples interstate and overseas.
“We discussed factors that make a rail trail iconic: like it being a bookable product (with tours, transfers, bike hire, food and wine experiences); having a high density of wow moments (such as tall forests, historic bridges, and coastal vistas) and it being something amazing that would compel someone to travel a region specifically to experience it,” James reported.
The forum marked an important step in translating strategic planning into on-ground tourism investment, helping position the Wadandi Track as a future destination-driving attraction for WA’s South West.
