Register for news updatesWith a month to go until rail trail enthusiasts from around Australia gather in Canberra, there’s still time to reach Rail Trail Australia’s (RTA) 2026 conference venue on 2 wheels. As Cycling Around Canberra author and RTA supporter Bruce Ashley notes, Canberra has one of the nation’s most extensive cycling networks (see CBR Cycle Routes), and riding is allowed on all footpaths and shared paths in the ACT for all ages. We thank him for researching the following options for those planning to arrive to the conference by bike!
Arriving by bike: To cycle to the Labor Club conference venue in Belconnen from the City (Civic), take the scenic route (C8+LBG+C5) via Lake Burley Griffin and Black Mountain (11.3km), or route C3 via O’Connor Ridge (8.3km). From Kingston train station (14.4km) you can ride route C3 down to, and along, the south side of Lake Burley Griffin, cross Commonwealth Ave bridge, then take route C3. From the airport (19km) use the LBG pathway alongside Morshead Dr which takes you to the northern side of Lake Burley Griffin.
Pedal Power Canberra has maps and info for riders, and cycling maps are available from most newsagents. Bikes are carried free-of-charge on most of the ACT buses on an exterior front-mounted rack, and bikes are allowed free on wall-mounted racks in the light rail carriages from Gungahlin to Civic (CBD). You can also get around Canberra on a hire e-bikes or e-scooters via the Lime App. E-bike users can use EV charging stations (if you have your own battery charger).
Bike parking: There are on-street bike hoops in Cameron Ave (~100m from event entry). The Belconnen Transportation Interchange Bike Shed is located 250m from the venue on Cohen St with access via a requested MyWay card. Conference delegates might be able to leave their bikes inside the Labor Club venue (see reception at entry via Edmonstone Pl), or at the Mercure Hotel if you are a guest (including e-bikes).
