Rushworth to Murchison Rail Trail Project (Waranga Section) Update
The exciting 11km extension to the current Rushworth to Murchison Rail Trail is aimed to be
finished by early to mid 2024. The first stage of the project which involved engagement and
design has been completed and it is anticipated that the approvals and tenders will be
completed by the end of June 2023. Once these are secured construction will be completed
in stages by the end of March 2024.
The project has been funded by the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community
Infrastructure Program and the Bushfire Recovery Grant Program and will be delivered by
Campaspe Shire Council. More information can be found on Campaspe Council’s website
https://www.campaspe.vic.gov.au/Plan-build/Works-projects/Rushworth-to-Murchison-Rail-Trail
The trail will take advantage of the natural attractions including canals and the magnificent
Waranga Basin. History boards are already prevalent on the current trail providing
interesting and informative facts about the area’s history. When it is completed the 19km
trail will connect the two townships of Murchison and Rushworth. When visiting the rail
trail it will be worth checking out the Whroo Forest and the wineries to the south of
Murchison at Nagambie and Avenel. Train travellers to the area will also be able to access
Murchison on the Shepparton line, stopping at Murchison East which has just been
upgraded through the Victorian State Government’s Big Build program
A 3km riding path connects the station to the Murchison township.
The trail has potential to grow further and become part of a larger Rail Trail network. For

Have ridden the Murchison to Waranga Basin section gravel and sealed bitumen. A couple of road crossings on the main highway about 12 kms in total currently but once joined from Rushworth will be a nice ride.
Great news! We rode from Rushworth to Murchison last year and the traffic was too close, fast and frequent, making for an unpleasant ride.
Once complete it will make for a good three day ride from Bendigo to MUrchison taking in the O'Keefe Trail and this new one. In between is a lovely ride though the Whroo State Forest from Heathcote to Rushworth.
Wish we could have one up here between Swan Hill and Lake Boga
