The railside shared path is approaching half way, having successfully made it through metropolitan Baxter from the Frankston council boundary at Golf Links Rd. When finished, it will allow walkers and cyclists to travel 26km from Frankston, in Melbourne’s outer southern suburbs, to Bittern, largely on a sealed shared path with a few gentle curves.
It also makes it possible for riders to access the Western Port Bay Trail more easily and is part of the transformational Peninsula Trail project, which aims to create 170km of shared paths across the region. The $7 million Somerville section has involved extensive consultation with Stony Point Line operator Metro Trains and the Department of Transport & Planning to ensure access for railway maintenance vehicles and safety for trail users.
The next part, alongside busy Frankston-Flinders Rd, includes a signalised pedestrian crossing at the dangerous Hawkins Rd curve which will be synchronised with the level-crossing lights. When completed, users will be able to travel as far as Bittern on a rail trail and then return to Frankston on the Sprinter train service (subject to space for bikes).
Following extensive community consultation, the next phase of the Peninsula Trail masterplan, the Moorooduc to Mornington section, has been adopted by Mornington Shire Council as a railside project so that it can go to the detailed design and costing phase.
