Toll road operator Transurban then chipped in with 500m along Hall St as part of the West Gate Tunnel project, but that ends abruptly north of Spotswood Station. Victoria’s Level Crossing Removal Authority has now picked up the ball to fill 2 of the gaps, with the latest drawings for their current Newport project (a level-crossing closure at Champions Rd and rail bridge at Maddox Rd) revealing they will take the rail trail 1km from Champions Rd to the section in Altona North.
The authority has also released preliminary drawings for a rail bridge project at Spotswood that will also bring the “Hall St Strategic Cycling Corridor” south towards Newport by 2028. Hobson Bay City Council is to take it the rest of the way there with a dedicated bike path.
All up, 6km. There are some short sections further down the line at Laverton and Werribee that seem unlikely to join the party any time soon. The Altona Loop, which leaves the Werribee Line after Newport, seems to have some potential to provide that connection.
