Plans for an 8km extension of the Mornington Railside Trail as part of the ambitious Peninsula Trails project in Victoria have taken a hit, with the draft master plan now recommending a route diverging widely from the railway corridor. Citing infrastructural and environmental concerns, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s consultants have plotted a zig-zag route using service easements and road reserves that would add about 1km to the trip to the foreshore. It would use an existing track near Mornington Tourist
Railway’s Moorooduc Station before veering north up a slight incline, back across the railway corridor and then south of it for the rest of the way. The proposed route crosses the heritage railway’s tracks three times and uses shared paths on major roads while avoiding most of the rail corridor, which contains some indigenous plants with “high-value biodiversity”.
“The magic of the ride along the existing goat track, in safety and away from traffic, seems to have been lost,” said Ross Kilborn of the Mornington SafeLink action group. “This could have been one of our few rail trails with an operational steam train running alongside it.”
The shire council is running a series of community consultations covering all 11 missing links in the 170km Peninsula Trails scheme until January 23, with comments accepted online until January 31.

A rail trail goes along the old RAIL LINE, nowhere near unsafe roads. Which is not good for trying to encourage younger cyclists, and the older ebikers as well.
It was bad enough that “the COUNCIL” made the bad decision to stop the train in the first place!!! Listen to the people, that’s what you are voted in for!!
