Community interest is growing around 2 potential rail trails in Western Australia. In the mid-west region, a rail trail linking Geraldton to Northampton is being championed by a group of community advocates. At approximately 53km long, the proposed trail would follow the alignment of WA’s first government railway, which opened in 1879 and closed to trains in 1957.
In the state’s south west, there is renewed momentum behind a rail trail linking Donnybrook with Boyup Brook – a length of around 76km. This potential rail trail is being promoted by the Preston River Valley Group as part of a broader food and wine tourism experience and it appears to be gaining some political traction. A Promote Preston spokesperson said they have been lobbying for a multi-use rail trail since 1996, and reported that Premier Cook expressed his interest in ‘activating’ the rail trail along the Donnybrook-Boyup Brook Rd at a February meeting.
While neither proposal has yet attracted funding, interest in rail trails is clearly growing in WA. Rail Trails Australia will continue monitoring these developments and provide support wherever possible.
