The 2.1km project is still in the design phase, but the narrowness of the railway corridor means the popular commuting route will be closed for prolonged periods during construction and cyclists forced onto back-street detours. Cycling groups are arguing that many will ride on nearby Sydney Rd for the duration, risking their lives among increased tram, car and bus traffic, rather than take the official detours.
About 2500 riders and pedestrians daily use the Upfield Shared Path, which branches off from the Capital City Trail at Royal Park. In the lead-up to November’s state election, Bicycle Network Victoria is pushing for the closure “to be used as an opportunity to trial separated bike lanes” on busy Sydney Rd before accessible tram stops are installed.
The railway project’s start has been delayed until 2028 but the Level Crossing Removal Authority is promising that the designs we see next year will match the high standard achieved at Moreland and Coburg stations immediately to the north. Level crossings will remain further out towards Upfield but the trail there is wider and has solar lighting. The final section to join the M80 Ring Road Path is due for completion in August after a very lengthy delay which was resolved by routing the path away from the railway line via a stormwater basin.
