Register for news updatesGympie Regional Council has announced that it has secured $600,000 funding from the Queensland State Government to undertake welcome upgrades on a 9km section of the Kilkivan-Kingaroy Rail Trail (KKRT) that it manages between Goomeri and Murgon. This section has 5 significant gullies of which only one presently has a low level bridge. All have difficult approaches and most have permanent water.
Works will include the installation of new culverts, construction of concrete riverbed crossings, erosion repairs and the replacement of 10 pedestrian gates with cattle grids to improve access along the trail. This will improve safety, accessibility and significantly enhance the opportunity for more trail users to enjoy this scenic section of the KKRT. Presently only competent off road cyclists on suitable mountain bikes, and seasoned, prepared hikers are able to negotiate this section.
According to Rick Johnston, Gympie Regional Council’s Coordinator Open Space Maintenance, design work has commenced and funding is based on works being completed this financial year.
The remaining 30km of trail through to Kilkivan will receive some track upgrades with this funding. Future funding will be needed to remove all 40 pedestrian gates and to install more culverts on this longer section. Getting Goomeri linked to Murgon will be a marvellous first step in activating the entire trail through to Kilkivan.
The other 49km of the 89km-long rail trail is managed by the South Burnett Regional Council.

This is written like the section from Kilkivan to Murgon doesn't exist. It's been there for many years, just a bit rugged now due to patchy maintenance.
At long last!!! There is SO MUCH potential in opening up the section of trail from Kilivan to Murgon … and then complete what would be a WONDERFUL asset – Gympie to Kilkivan (and then on to connect with the BVRT!)
