Construction of the 11km western half of the Waranga (Murchison-Rushworth) Rail Trail is moving along nicely and it is anticipated that work will be completed by the end of March. Earthworks Civil and Construction have completed most of the preparatory work for the 1km asphalt section to Bendigo-Murchison Rd (Station St) in Rushworth and are waiting for the sub-base to stabilise before sealing it. Northern Construction Group are working on the gravel shared path from there to the current end of the trail at Channel Inlet Rd, Waranga, which includes repairs and fencing on six concrete bridges built when the line was diverted south for the Waranga Basin reservoir.
No one could be happier with progress than the Waranga Rail Trail Friends group. Our Northern Victorian representative, Jenny Mustey, caught up with one of them, Graeme Hanigan, at the Bicycle Network’s Super Sunday recreational count in Rushworth, where he was getting in some practice with a clipboard. It was a great opportunity to catch up with the appropriately attired Graeme to chat about the trail developments and discuss other riding adventures across Victoria. All being well, there will be many more riders for him to count next year when the rail trail is open.
One of the attractions of the development for Rushworth residents will be the creation of a 2km loop from High St featuring part of the new trail and an existing asphalt path that meanders along the railway corridor nearby. For updates on the development, Campaspe Council provide regular news and fact sheets on their website https://www.campaspe.vic.gov.au/Plan-build/Works-projects/Waranga-Rail-Trail

Cannot wait for the completion of the trail looking forward to the ride next year
Well done Campaspe Shire.
Its great to see the passion of Graeme and the Waranga Rail Trail Friends group, who have been part of various community groups behind this trail's development. Connecting this 'orphaned' rail trail to the O'Keefe Rail Trail at Heathcote, via the proposed Heathcote Rushworth Trail, is the next challenge for local communities and Campaspe Shire Council.
