Community support for the completion of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail (NRRT) in New South Wales continues to grow, with strong enthusiasm across the region for completion of the full trail from Murwillumbah through to Casino.
The opened sections from Casino through Lismore, and Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek have been an overwhelming success, proving how much life and activity the trail brings to the region.
Last week the Federal Government rejected a joint $42 million funding application from the Byron and Lismore councils to extend the trail connecting Mullumbimby, Byron Bay, Bexhill and Lismore.
While disappointing, this reinforces why community voices are so important. Strong public backing sends a clear message that the NRRT is not just a tourism project, but a significant long term investment in regional connectivity, local business growth, healthy lifestyles and community development.
This disappointing setback doesn’t mean the end, it means we have to shout louder! A massive community petition has been launched with a goal to secure 100,000 signatures to present to the NSW and Australian governments. This petition is a powerful collective voice to demand the necessary funding.
