The first Trains'n'Timber Festival was held on 2nd and 3rd November. At the festival an announcement was received from Minister Sherryl Garbutt giving approval for the creation of a rail trail from Shelley to Keotong.

The offical opening of the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail has been set for Friday 13 September.

The WA Department of Sport and Recreation has announced that the Trailswest unit will be shut down.

The second Australian Tracks and Trails Conference will be held in Perth from 14 to 16 October 2002.

The East Gippsland Rail Trail is having its annual ride/walk/horseride on Saturday 22 June.
