Details
Features
- A proposed 53km rail trail from the major regional centre of Rockhampton to the coastal resort town of Yeppoon
- The first section in Yeppoon has been opened to a high standard.
- There is also strong community support to extend the trail all the way to the Rockhampton to join the two communities.
Description
Yeppoon
- The first 4.5km section from the centre of Yeppoon to the Yeppoon - Rockhampton Rd is relatively level and has a high standard asphalt surface.
- It passes through urban and picturesque bushland settings, and is a valuable recreation and commuting link to get into the centre of town.
Access points
Future Sections
- The 39km from Yeppon Golf Course to Nerimbera passes through flat bushland initially to Cawarral then becomes more hilly and winding as it passes through Mt Chalmers and Mt Nicholson stations towards Rockhampton.
- The 9.5km from Nerimbera to Rockhampton is still an active railway. An on road path or rail side trail beside the railway could be constructed and there is certainly a precedent in Rockhampton where mainline trains run down the main street!
The Queensland government is currently looking at proposals for the Yeppoon station precinct area to finally develop this and have an appropriate focal point for the rail trail, and town.
Livingstone council and Queensland Transport and Main Roads are currently reviewing options to cross the busy Rockahmpton - Yeppoon Road so that the rail trail can extend on to Cawarral. The rail trail will link several proposed residential and tourism developments.
Background Information
The railway line was constructed in 1909 and was closed beyond Broadmeadows when its main loading, pineapples, were shifted to road transport in 2006.
The Rockhampton Regional Council has committed to taking on the lease of the rail corridor and funding has been obtained for the first section.
With to de-alamagation in Janurary 2014 this rail trail is now maintained under the new Livingstone Shire Council, who need to be encouraged to apply for funding to extend this raill trail.
Links
Livingstone Shire Council manage the rail trail.
