Details
Features
The trail follows a former tramway to the Balmoral POW Camp. It is part of the Munda Biddi Trail.
Description
- Balmoral Trail provides linkage to Mundlimup Timber Trail, POW Camp Trail and Bibbulmun Track, plus the Munda Biddi Cycle Trail.
- The trail goes through bushland and some farmland. Along the way the trail passes a log loading ramp and several "shield trees". These shield trees have numbers carved into them and were used by foresters in the 1920s as a grid reference system.
- At one point the rail formation crosses a private farm. Stiles have been provided to allow access across the farm, but cyclists are advised to follow the Munda Biddi Trail which takes a slightly steeper route to avoid the private property.
- Signage is lacking in a couple of places so a copy of the Munda Biddi Trail Map (Map 1) is recommended.
- The rail trail finishes at the POW Camp. Signage describes its operation and explains the ruins that remain. A walk option is from the Balmoral POW Camp to Sullivan Rock carpark, linking up with the Bibbulmum Track, an extension of 9km. From the POW Camp, stands of grass trees (Kingias) are passed through before returning to a section of the trail that re-joins the timber tramway to Millar’s Log Road. Note the sleepers on the old tramway.
Background Information
The trail follows a former tramway from Jarrahdale to the site of the Balmoral POW Camp.
The adjacent area was the site of Jarrahdale’s number 3 timber mill, called the ‘39’ mill, as it was on the banks of the ’39 Mile Brook’.
