Features

This Trail is not developed.  It is one of 17 potential Rail Trails in NSW.

The disused railway between Armidale and Wallangarra is approx 210km long, and traverses some picturesque countryside in the New England Ranges of Northern NSW

  • A lot of the old railway stations have been preserved and refurbished by local community groups
  • The Tenterfield Railway Station has been turned into a museum with a lot of rolling stock and memorabilia at the station
  • The line went past Ben Lomond which at 4,473 feet above sea level, is the highest railway station in Australia
  • Wallangarra Station is on the NSW - QLD border, and was the change of gauge station.  All buildings and rail lines remain in situ
  • Larger towns of Armidale, Guyra, Glen Innes, and Tenterfield offer many accommodation and dining options

Description

Many years of lobbying by the local New England Rail Trail community group and rail trail support groups has seen the 103km Armidale to Glenn Innes section identified as one of three pilot rail trails that would be supported by the state government.

This continued lobbying has led to a feasibility study being completed in 2018 and a business case in 2019 for the Armidale to Glenn Innes section. In February 2020 the Armidale Council agreed to allocate funds for design and look at a management structure. It is hoped that shortly the Glenn Innes council will do the same.

Background Information

The Main North line starts from Sydney and extends north to the Queensland border, at the town of Wallangarra.

It once was the main line to Queensland, with a break-of-gauge at the border. Now however, the North Coast Line provides a standard gauge line to Brisbane, and the Main North is disused beyond Armidale.

The section from Sydney to Maitland forms part of the main northern trunk line, and carries all sorts of freight and passenger trains. From Maitland to Armidale, freight dominates, especially coal in rich Hunter Valley coal fields. Nevertheless, passenger trains do run all the way to Armidale.

The town of Werris Creek is a major rail location, where the north-west lines branch off.
