The $1.5 million Wallsend to Glendale shared pathway was officially opened on Friday 1 June 2012.
The NSW state government contributed $750,000 to the project, while Newcastle and Lake Macquarie councils both put in $375,000.
The new pathway linking Wallsend and Glendale, provides a wonderful, uninterrupted recreational feature for the western part of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, and has been hailed as the “Fernleigh Track of the west”.
Lake Macquarie Mayor GREG PIPER also welcomes the new track and says it provides a critical missing link in the region’s cycling network.
“The Wallsend to Glendale shared pathway connects Lake Macquarie residents to bike routes that can take them to the John Hunter Hospital, the University of Newcastle and Tighes Hills TAFE. In addition, it connects Newcastle residents with Glendale TAFE.”
Member for Wallsend SONIA HORNERY says the project would not have been possible without the commitment of her predecessor. “I wish to pay tribute to my predecessor, John Mills, for strongly advocating in NSW Parliament for the building of this historic shared pathway, and securing funding of $750,000 in the 2004/2005 State Budget.” “Ken Scott, an enthusiastic bush-walking local, also deserves praise for promoting the pathway within our community.”
The shared pathway is three metres wide, 3.65 kilometres in length and runs from Ganney Street Wallsend to Frederick Street Glendale.
The corridor used to be part of the former steam tramway between West Wallsend and Speers Point, which operated from 1912 to 1930.
