A new paper on Active Transport for SE Queensland includes support for a Boonah – Ipswich trail to make Ipswich a major active recreation hub by linking the existing heavily utilised Brisbane Valley Rail Trail to the SE Queensland weekend destination of Boonah.
The Boonah – Ipswich trail has the potential to make Ipswich a major active recreation hub by linking the existing heavily utilised Brisbane Valley Rail Trail to the SE Queensland weekend destination of Boonah and the Fassifern Rail Trail.
It is part of a timely report on Active Transport for South East Queensland and some of the longer lasting changes that may result from the Covid19 pandemic.
The Boonah — Ipswich trail was planned in detail by the state government in 2011 but did not progress.
It’s a plan for a recreational trail that runs from Hardings Paddock to Wyaralong Dam and on to Boonah, 71km in total. Much of it has already been built so what it needs is the linkages.
The Ipswich Boonah trail would be a great tourism and recreation boon for Ipswich.
It would build on the huge success of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail and would serve to link Esk, where the local council have just bought a mountain for a new mountain bike park with the existing mountain bike trails at Mount Joyce (Wyaralong Dam).
In COVID time, local tourism is booming, a change that may well become permanent. This trail would allow Ipswich to become the hub of two major trails – BVRT and Boonah Ipswich and for it to cement itself as the jumping off point for regional recreation.
