On Friday 11 November, the two RTA Regional Reps for South Australia and their partners travelled to Clare to attend the unveiling of a new artwork on the Riesling Trail.
The new sculpture depicts internationally renowned Australian author Monica McInerney as a child sitting on the roof of the nearby Station Master’s house reading a book. This was where she grew up and the Clare Valley, the railway and the Riesling Trail all feature in a number of her novels. Local tourism operators report many tourists stating that the reason they are visiting the area and the Riesling Trail is because of her many books.
The sculpture was commissioned by The Riesling Trail Management Committee and funded by enthusiastic fundraising and sponsorship. The Committee also hosted the unveiling and provided great country hospitality with drinks and nibbles.
Ms McInerney, her husband and other family members were present at the unveiling. The large crowd was enthralled by her stories of her childhood and the process of having the sculpture built. Artist Paul Leditschke was also present and spoke of the techniques used to produce the sculpture.
The new sculpture sits between the Riesling Trail and the Station Master’s House (now a B&B) and adjacent to the old station site.
