While most of the work extending the Great Southern Rail Trail from Welshpool to Alberton had been completed by the end of 2023, three major storms, as well as some material shortages, have delayed the official opening.
Even established sections of the trail between Nyora and Welshpool were closed for several weeks following storms on February 3, 2024, but have now reopened after rectification works to ensure the safety of trail users. Other trails, like the Grand Ridge Rail Trail, were also closed temporarily while repairs were carried out.
The new section of the GSRT has suffered from flooding, fallen trees and damage to recently completed infrastructure. As a further challenge, widespread damage across Gippsland has placed huge demand on clean-up and repair services.
While a date for the new section to be open is still not finalised, but the project team can see the finish line and are confident that the extension, to make this trail 135km long, will be completed soon.
In the meantime, the Wellington Shire is requesting that people stay clear of the Welshpool to Alberton section – which is still a construction zone.
