The federal government has announced $13m in funding to complete this 134km rail trail in North East Victoria. The three councils of the Mitchell, Murrundindi and Mansfield shires that contain the rail trail will also contribute $1.2 million.
The completed rail trail will extend from Tallarook on the main Melbourne-Sydney railway to Mansfield in the east with a branch off to Alexandra. Click Here for a description, map and photos of the rail trail.
The Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, said he had met the Murrindindi and Mitchell shires to discuss projects that would help bushfire recovery.
“They advised me that this project was about supporting local economies through tourism and building community spirit after the devastating bushfires,” he said.
Railtrails Australia welcomes this major federal government support and also the equally major support by the three councils. It is the result of a long and careful planning process by the councils and local community groups, and builds on the state government funding received last year for construction of the Mansfield to Maindample section.
The Mansfield Shire will manage the project on behalf of the three shires and the really great news is that the whole project is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2011.
We do not have full details of the construction plan yet but it is understood that the trail surface will be gravel with sealed sections in population centres. Some major bridge works will be required. Construction will continue on from Maindample back towards Tallarook.
