This week, we received the tragic news that the Mullumbimby railway station on the old Northern Rivers Railway was destroyed by fire.
The station was the third one erected on the site since 1884, having replaced the previous structure in 1982.
Mullumbimby station closed in July 2004 after the railway ceased operations between Murwillumbah and Casino. It has been operating as a “community hub” for ten years after initially failing into disrepair.
Preliminary indications are that the fire was caused by an electrical fault. Investigations are ongoing.
The railway line is currently being converted to the spectacular Northern Rivers Rail Trail (NRRT), which has yet to reach Mullumbimby in Byron Shire. The council is currently conducting preliminary planning on this and other sections of the project, and the fire has dealt a devastating blow to plans by locals to establish trail businesses in the building.
The tragedy underscores our view of the urgent need to preserve and protect our precious railway heritage by incorporating as many structures and artifacts as possible into reactivated trail precincts.
