If you are planning a visit to a rail trail, here are our tips for a safe, enjoyable and relaxing walk, ride or run.
Familiarise yourself and those in your group with rail trail etiquette, also known as “code of conduct” – most rail trails have etiquette guidelines posted at trail heads or along trails. For cyclists, the main requirements are to ride carefully and courteously, and to give way to walkers and others on foot;
Check the weather for your planned visit, and take food, water and sunscreen for the trip; water is important in summer months as many trails don’t have drinkable water available;
For cyclists: check the condition of your bicycle and carry spare parts and tools on your ride – this could save a lot of time and inconvenience when problems occur;
Charge up your mobile phone or smart phone; you can follow your progress on Australian rail trails with a smart phone by logging in to the Rail Trails Australia website and opening the rail trail map (subject to mobile coverage).
When out and about on rail trails this summer, watch out for snakes.
