The Adelaide to Port Dock railway line was constructed in 1856 to service the passenger and freight movement between the Port Dock and Adelaide. With the establishment of port facilities at Semaphore and later at Outer Harbour, the line to the Port Dock was no longer required and was removed. The rejuvenation of the Port Dock precinct through residential development has led to the re-establishment of the 1 km rail line from the Outer Harbour line to a new railway station in the Port Adelaide commercial centre. As a consequence, the Outer Harbour Rail Trail, which previously moved through overgrown paddocks, which were once a busy rail yard, will now have a well-defined and attractive route close to the new line and the new Port Dock Station.
The project is expected to be completed in mid-2024.
