On Friday 13 December 2019 DELWP (Victorian Government’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning) held a short recognition presentation at the Nicholson station shelter for the East Gippsland Rail Trail Committee of Management (EGRT CoM).
The photo below show Janice Preston (a long time CoM member), Al Campbell (a member since 2018 and looking after the trail usage counters), John Nelson (another member of the early committees), Andrew Sharpe (a DELWP staffer but also a volunteer founding committee member and key person ever since), and Michael Oxer (prior long serving CoM member). Janice and Al accepted the award for the whole committee. Between John, Andrew and Michael they chalked up 54 years of service.
Michael was also one of the founding members of Rail Trails Australia and has recently returned to work on rail trail usage measurement.
After the award ceremony, Michael sat in on an EGRT Committee meeting over a meal at the Nicholson pub which was focused on encouraging new involvement from the business sector with ideas for events on the EGRT.
