As we wait for the legislation to go through NSW parliament for Tweed Valley Rail Trail corridor to be transfered to crown land, the Casino to Bentley section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail (NRRT) moved a step closer to becoming a reality.
Richmond Valley Council awarded Lenox Heads company Planit Consulting the contract to develop the master plan for their 13.5 km section of the Rail Trail.
Northern Rivers Rail Trail spokesperson Marie Lawton said that Planit’s appointment was great news for the project. Planit is a local company that employs local people and they will make the rail trail work because they know it’s not just about building a concrete path.
There is still a great deal of work to do yet before the rail trail is open with the NSW parliament needing to set up the legislative framework for the corridor to be used for this purpose.
More information can be found on the Northern Rivers Rail Trails Supporters Facebook page.
In other news the Northern Rivers Rail Trail group recently met with the Bangalow Chamber of Commerce, who are keen to revisit the idea of a bike/walkway on the corridor through the town. They would like to bring this before Byron Shire Council as part of a master plan. In this area the rail trail could possibly be built beside the tracks which would fit in with current Council thinking.
