Completion of major upgrades to East Gippsland Rail Trail
A celebration on 25 November on the trail at Mossiface will mark the completion of a series of major upgrades to the iconic East Gippsland Rail Trail.
Commencing 2 years ago, the $4.8m upgrade project was generously funded by the Australian Government’s Community Development Grant ($2m) and by the State of Victoria through Emergency Recovery Victoria’s Local Economic Recovery grant program ($1.5m LER2 and $1.3m LER3) in response to the Black Summer Bushfires which impacted communities in the East Gippsland Shire.
Works undertaken with the grants has included:
- surface upgrades, including sealing the heavily used parts of the trail around Nicholson, Bruthen, and Nowa Nowa,
- the addition of a boardwalk at Deep Creek
- installation of culverts in problem areas,
- addressing several areas that were prone to erosion,
- repairs to or complete rebuild of bridges,
- the installation of creek signs, ESTA markers, and upgraded trail usage counters,
- road crossing safety standardisation,
- fencing and installation of barriers to prevent illegal vehicle access to the trail,
The volunteer committee of management has worked hard to obtain funding for the upgrades through various sources.
