Rail Trails Australia is now available to receive donations through the 10 cents Containers for Change scheme in Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales.
Hopefully South Australia, ACT, Northern Territory and Tasmania will soon allow direct donations as well.
For those not aware about the Containers for Change scheme, you receive 10 cents for every old can and bottle you drop off at various drop-off locations around each state. You can choose to donate your refund directly to Rail Trails Australia.
In Victoria, the scheme is called Container Deposit Scheme, you can sign up through https://cdsvic.org.au/
In NSW, it’s called Return and Earn https://returnandearn.org.au/
Both Queensland and Western Australia use Containers for Change https://www.containersforchange.com.au/
Each state has its own container deposit scheme mobile app, which will allow you to choose to donate directly to Rail Trails Australia.
To donate to Rail Trails Australia, open the relevant app for your location, and depending on the app, click on either the “Charities” or “Donations” button. Then search for Rail Trails Australia. You will see our name “Rail Trails Australia” and (depending on the app) also our logo. Select it to donate to Rail Trails Australia.
When you drop your cans and bottles off at a vending machine or at a drop-off depot, first scan the barcode on the app which says Rail Trails Australia. Then you donate your cans and bottles.
Your donation will go directly to Rail Trails Australia, which will allow us to advocate for developing and improving rail trails nation-wide.
