Kudos to the Queensland State Department of Transport and Main Roads, the trail managers of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, who have recently completed construction of an admirable trailhead at Wulkuraka. This is at the Ipswich end of the trail, Australia’s longest continuous rail trail, closest to Brisbane. Since the trail opened more than a decade ago, there has been nothing to denote the start/finish of the rail trail at this end. Neither were there any facilities, not even a water access location. For trail users, getting to the start or end of the trail at Wulkuraka was somewhat of an anticlimax, even a disappointment, as there was simply nothing there. No longer.
The start/finish now is designated by an impressive trestle bridge installation utilizing timbers salvaged from former rail corridor infrastructure. A dedicated car park and bus turnaround are positioned in a landscaped area adjacent to the trailhead and is distinctively signposted from the road. Trail users now have access to inviting shelter sheds, an amenities block, water for themselves and their dogs, and information panels acknowledging both the First Nation Peoples’ heritage and the history of the former Wulkuraka Rail Station. The trailhead is now a suitably impressive place to either begin or end a journey on what is becoming one of the nation’s premier rail trails.

My friends & I would love to ride the railtrail again, but would love to know of any undercover parking for vehicles near Wulkuraka or Ipswich as it cost more than $20,000 to repair hail damage while we rode the trail.
Hi Noel,
Paid, secure, undercover parking is available at the Ipswich Hospital Foundation Carpark above Ipswich Railway Station (P3: Covered, multi-story carpark on Bell Street, Ipswich).
You can then head towards the Brassall Bikeway/BVRT via the Ipswich CBD Top of Town & towards Sadlier's Crossing Railway Bridge to Wulkuraka, or via North Ipswich (via the David Trumpy Bridge).

Looks great, must check it out!
Pleased to see that there good bike paths and signage connecting the urban areas of Ipswich to complement the new rail head works. Means that locals as well as those arriving into Ipswich by train can ride along cycling facilities to the trail head. This safe connection between town centre and trailhead to cater for active travel trips is what is urgently needed at the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. At present there is no signage or specific facilities to help riders and walkers get from Murwillumbah town centre, across the river and multi-laned roundabout to the trailhead at the rebuilt station.
It’s looking really good now, very impressive!
fantastic work to state roads and Transport dept.
