Over 140 cyclists of various ages recently enjoyed an organised family friendly ride along sections of the Great Victorian Rail Trail (GVRT). With a variety of starting locations, cyclists converged on Cathkin in beautiful sunshine to enjoy a BBQ lunch at a scenic location by the Goulburn River.
Those riding from Yea in addition to riding through the only tunnel on a Victorian rail trail, enjoyed the country hospitality of a Devonshire Tea in a shearing shed along with a working sheep dog demonstration.
This is the fifth time the event has been held and was supported by a number of Bicycle User Groups along with participants from around Victoria and even interstate. This year the organisers enjoyed a significant increase in participants and have received many compliments around how well it was organised, and the wonderful hospitality.
This type of non competitive event provides an opportunity for families and individuals to enjoy a safe cycling environment while raising awareness of the benefits offered by our rail trails. Many of the visitors also stayed in Yea or Alexandra over the weekend which helped support local accommodation venues and local businesses.
Organised by the Rotary Clubs of Yea and Alexandra, the event is a joint fundraising activity to support rotary youth programs in the area. The event attracted excellent sponsorship this year to help make the day special.
Following the success of this year’s event, Cycle Dindi will be returning in 2022.
