In March the East Gippsland Rail Trail volunteer committee of management hosted East Gippsland Shire Council councillors Mayor Cr John White, Cr Bernie Farquhar, Cr Jodie Ashworth and Community Infrastructure Planner, Ron Parker, on the rail trail. Pre-ride the committee briefed councillors on the history of the trail and provided information on how other trails throughout the state are funded for maintenance. They also outlined areas they would like addressed.
The group then rode from the historic Stony Creek Trestle Bridge to Nowa Nowa, with some continuing on to view Ironstone Creek Trestle Bridge. Chair of the committee, Gaynor Rettino, said it was an opportunity to show councillors the work that had been done on the trail over recent years, and discuss the challenges the committee faces with no ongoing maintenance funding. The committee has been proactive in addressing several issues, including safety at major road crossings. At 96km, the East Gippsland Rail Trail is one of the longest in Victoria and only runs through one municipality. Michelle Webb, from Snowy River Cycling, which uses the East Gippsland Rail Trail, urged council to support the committee in its efforts to maintain it.
