Register for news updatesEastern end of Great Southern Rail Trail nears completion
Wellington Shire Council, in conjunction with South Gippsland Shire Council, is constructing 21km of the Great Southern Rail Trail between Welshpool and Alberton. The project has been funded through $6 million from the Victorian Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund.
Trail construction is progressing well, with nine bridges underway – five large and four small, as well as culvert cleaning and replacement, and construction of farm cattle crossings. Works are scheduled to be complete by the end of 2023, with a grand opening event planned for early 2024 (date TBC).
Trail and bridge construction sites are not yet open to the public, and users should not seek to obtain access until construction fencing and signage have been removed.
Once complete, the trail will link into Yarram as well as the Tarra Trail at Port Albert. This will mark completion of The Great Southern Rail Trail between Yarram to Nyora for locals and tourists, with the eastern end reaching the coastal area, rich in history, which is being actively promoted by the Wellington Shire as the Middle of Everywhere.
