Construction on the 20km rail trail through the Coonawarra Wine Region in South Australia
commenced before Christmas and is expected to be completed by April 2022.
The trail will be constructed over the existing rail lines and sleepers (a condition of the licence agreement between the Council and State Government) and will use local materials of sandstone and limestone as a base beneath the sealed surface which will be flush with the rails as a feature of the trail.
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport has been asked to explain the rationale of the licence agreement condition which requires the rail lines and sleepers to be retained beneath the new rail trail.
The opening of the Coonawarra Rail Trail will be a significant benefit to the wine and tourism industries of the region.

Not a good idea to leave the sleepers. They will decay and divots in the surface will make the trail bumpy. The Pichi Richi railway at Quorn would gladly use the sleepers to run their engines. Also, the rails could be recycled and help fund the project. Otherwise, thank you for another trail!
