The plan to link the Great Southern Rail Trail and Bass Coast Rail Trail at Nyora has taken a further step as tenders for the feasibility study close. This allows the selection of consultants who will prepare supporting investment information to allow the Design and Construction for the 25 Km trail link between Nyora and Woolamai. Tenders closed during the week ending 15 September 2023.
The link is a key element in the Gippsland Odessey trail system, which provides an extensive web of trails throughout the wider Gippsland region, covering multiple shire councils. The link also creates one of Victora’s longest continuous trails (183 kms) when coupled with the extension of the Great Southern Rail Trail from Welshpool to Alberton, where construction is well underway.
The appointment of consultants will further enable the key step of community consultation, where issues will be considered, including the impact on adjacent landholders who may hold concerns around issues such as stock movement/access, security, and biosecurity.
Leah Bellairs, Bass Coast Sustainable Transport and Movement Officer, is currently handling rail trail matters within the Bass Coast shire, including the planning of this important link.
