Big news to start the year with the 36km extension of the Great Southern Rail Trail in Gippsland Victoria mostly complete.
This is a marvellous new section with amazing scenery and new towns to explore, just in time if you are lucky enough to still be on holidays.
Look at our fully updated description including lots of new photos for all the details. This details the caveats that the Nyora to Loch section is not continuous due to ongoing bridge works and a short on-road diversion is required just below Korumburra for ongoing bridge work there. Otherwise Loch to Welshpool is a basically continuous 97km rail trail.
So while Loch is a logical start point for visitors at this stage, plenty of locals are enjoying the open Nyora section.
This includes this 86 years young couple below, snapped earlier in the week at Loch, rail trails and ebikes are keeping the whole community active and healthy longer.
We also had a chance to look at the South Gippsland Highway realignment works at the Black Spur south of Koonwarra. The construction for the rail trail is to a high standard with a wide high tunnel at the Koonwarra end (on original alignment) and wide new path for a slight diversion on the Meeniyan end. Apparently there has been minimal disruption to rail trail users so credit to Main Road Projects Victoria.

I have recently joined as a member. How do I find notes for the section Loch to Korumburra – part of the Great Southern Rail Trail. I was planning to do recce this ride tomorrow.
Hi Helen
Thank you for your support of Rail Trails Australia with your membership, greatly appreciated.
In the “Trail Guide” section of the trail description (refer link above) there are notes on Loch to Korumburra.
I am sure you will have a wonderful ride on this section.
I am really looking forward to cycling from nyora to port Welshpool over three days.
Paul
