On Saturday 26 March, RTA president Damian McCrohan and vice-president Steven Kaye enjoyed perfect autumn weather to help celebrate the official opening of the latest extension of the Great Southern Rail Trail from Korumburra to Leongatha in Gippsland, Victoria.
This 15km section is part of a 36km extension of the rail trail from Nyora to Leongatha. Refer to our Great Southern Rail Trail description for the full details, map and more pictures.
Speakers from council and the Korumburra Business Association, (who were constantly interrupted by trail users going past!!), spoke about the wonderful scenery that can now be experienced and the benefits already being experienced. This will be enhanced with opening of the complete extension later in the year and the launch of a Visitation and Marketing Plan to further promote the rail trail.
Rail Trails Australia thanks Council and the state government on their approximate $5M funding for the extension and congratulates the council, who contributed most of the funding, on the high standard of construction and the significant investment in their region, which is already paying off.
We look forward to the full opening later in the year and will let supporters know well in advance. In the meantime plan a trip to experience the already open sections and enjoy the wonderful autumn weather.

It’s a great addition to the trail but consider, as before, you still need a car to get to it as V/Line coaches don’t take bicycles. 🙁
Hi, Robert Irvine. According to the V/Line website (under "On board"), "85% of V/Line's VLocity fleet is made up of the fleet design below. This design features 222 seats with six accessible spaces and storage for up to six bicycles."
For other V/Line car designs, "Bicycles can be carried on V/Line trains, if there is space available. V/Line conductors will determine whether there is enough space for bicycles to be carried safely on each service. Prior to boarding, where possible, please speak to station staff or the conductor, who will determine if there is space available for you to travel with a bicycle, and if so, direct you to the best location to wait on the platform and where to store your bicycle for the duration of your journey."
Vline coaches are not vline trains. Vline coaches i.e. buses do not carry bicycles.
Wonderful news! This is already one of our favourite rail trails and the current and future extensions will only enhance this. It sounds like the local council and other organisations are also thinking about promotion and visitor enhancement as well, which can only be a good thing.
Great news and congratulations to all involved. This will be a wonderful extension of the already Great Southern Rail Trail.
This is already a wonderful rail trail, only to be further enhanced by the western extensions. Nyora is so close to Melbourne; linking the major towns of Korumburra and Leongatha is inspiring; what a great trail!
