Friday 14 November marked another major milestone on the Great Southern Rail Trail (GSRT) in Gippsland Victoria with the official ribbon cutting of the Railway Precinct Project. This has seen the transformation of the Leongatha and Korumburra railway station precincts from derelict railway yards into wonderful community facilities.
Rail Trails Australia president Damian McCrohan had the pleasure of representing the organisation at the opening; a real pleasure as these sort of developments are the epitome of what rail trails can achieve in not just linking towns together but revitalising their centres and making the former railway stations an important part of the community’s life again.
This $6 million project has reimagined the use of the railway land to enhance activity in the heart of the towns and increase open space in their communities.
The redevelopment includes a range of fantastic new features for residents and visitors to enjoy, including:
- New public open spaces and playground equipment
- A pedestrian footbridge in Leongatha connecting to the main street
- New paths connecting to business precincts
- Extensive tree planting and landscaping
- New public amenities for the community and users of the GSRT
- Additional car parking for both towns.
Again this project has been a team effort with $3 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, $2 million from the Victorian Government Regional Infrastructure Fund and South Gippsland Shire Council contributed $1 million. Our thanks to all 3 levels of government and noting again the very significant funding from the South Gippsland Shire Council that has transformed this into one of Australia’s premium rail trails.
The precincts are already in use and further detail about this will be provided in the upcoming summer issue of Rail Trail Connections for members.

Hi guys
great Trail, but has a vital missing link! There is no public transport to the Trail.
I have requested a review of V'Lines Bikes on Busses policy and only got paraphrased their existing policy of no bikes on Buses!
What I should have focused on was Bike racks on the front, similar to the buses that go to Heathcote.
Is this the sort of campaign you get involved with, as I feel individuals are too easy to shrug off.
This is very important to the Trail reaching its full potential. I have done many Trails in Vic but mainly ones I can get to & from easily. Nothing exciting about turning around and retracing our steps!

Fantastic developments. I used to catch the train along here and it's great to see the areas being put to good use again.
