Another detour has been removed from the High Country Rail Trail with the completion of a steel-truss bridge across Tallangatta Creek at Bullioh. The 70-metre-long original timber trestle bridge was washed away in the 2010 floods after many years of valiantly obstructing the flow of debris into Lake Hume, thanks to its piers being only 4 metres apart. The impressive new bridge was built slightly upstream, at a greater height and with a single 30-metre span across the creek to cope with the increased severity of floods that are part of climate change. The deck is the popular fibre-reinforced polymer grating. Salvageable timber from the old bridge has been used in the restoration of five other rail trail bridges, of which there are 33, while neighbours kindly provided a lease of a 50 metre strip of land to enable public access along the rail trail corridor while Parklands Albury Wodonga fundraised to replace the bridge. Parks Victoria, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action and Towong Shire Council did the paperwork to transfer land management responsibilities from Parks Victoria to the shire so the project could go ahead, with ongoing maintenance support from Tallangatta Rail Trail Advisory Group and Parklands Albury Wodonga. Financial assistance was provided by the Federal Government (Black Summer Bushfire Recovery program) and the shire council. Rail Trails Australia has already done a couple of laps of the new bridge but the official opening is on Wednesday, March 19, from 10am to 11am. Anyone interested in cycling out to the bridge can meet at the Tallangatta goods shed on Wagara St at 9am. Parking for the ribbon cutting and morning tea is at Bullioh Steamside Reserve south of the Murray Valley Hwy. Take care crossing the road to the bridge opening, which is near the old tennis courts.
