On a warm autumn day in May 2023, the local Otway community came together to witness the opening of the Old Beechy Rail Trail bike repair station in Gellibrand. There was quite a positive buzz amongst those who attended interested in both the repair station and the signage. This was the fruition of a project which had involved many people in the small timber community.
The community planned to provide a resting place and a facility to service bikes, to meet the current needs of visitors to the region and locals out exercising and exploring. The seed of an idea was waiting for the right conditions. Rail Trails Australia advised of the possibility of funding and so the project started to grow.
Long term relationships within the community saw Midway Plantations and the Gellibrand Community House join forces with the Friends of the Old Beechy Rail Trail to search for possibilities. The ground was prepared.
When Responsible Wood responded to the Friends’ vision and provided the funding, this project grew to reality. Many community members rolled up their sleeves to help get this project out of the ground, from preparing the site to cooking the BBQ on the reveal day, A great community feel.
