The Shires of Narrogin and Williams in Western Australia’s wheatbelt region have announced a joint initiative to explore the potential for a rail trail connecting the towns of Narrogin and Williams, a route of approximately 25km that follows the old Collie-Narrogin Railway. This is part of the Collie – Darkan Rail Trail.
Funded through the 2023-24 Community Trail Planning Grants Program, the grant will contribute towards initiation of a Narrogin to Williams Rail Trail Feasibility Study which will also be supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC).
The Collie – Narrogin Railway was constructed from 1904-1908 and primarily used to transport timber, farm produce, livestock and grain, as well as running a passenger service. It operated until 1979, with the sleepers removed in the early 1990s. The Narrogin – Williams section was the first to be constructed, opening in 1905.
This study represents a significant step toward providing a new link with the potential to connect to the existing Collie – Darkan Rail Trail in future. The Shires of Narrogin and Williams are excited about the tourism, economic and recreational benefits the rail trail could bring to their communities.
