Register for news updatesNew Woodend-Macedon-Riddells Creek Shared Trail being designed
Currently in the design phase, the Woodend-Macedon-Riddells Creek shared trail is a new trail to be built along the existing rail corridor that will provide a 24km cycling / walking / running trail linking the townships of Woodend, Macedon, New Gisborne and Riddells Creek.
Funding of $8.5million has been provided towards this project which is expected to cost a total of $9.75million.
The Macedon Ranges Shire Council is working with Regional Development Victoria on this project after it was identified for infrastructure funding by the Council. A feasibility report was published in August 2019 which showed this trail would provide a picturesque and safe route for residents and tourists to enjoy.
The trail will follow this route alongside the existing rail line, traveling through varied rural and farming terrains. The relatively short distances between townships will support local commuters as well as those who enjoy a break to explore the different townships. The ride between Woodend and Macedon will be 8.5km, the distance from Macedon to New Gisborne a comfortable 5.8km, and the New Gisborne to Riddells Creek section will be 9km. Each of these townships have railway stations on the Melbourne to Bendigo VLine service, so for Melbourne based rail trail enthusiasts, taking your bike on the train to one of these stations, cycling the trail and catching the train home, can be a fun day out of the city.
We will watch how this trail development progresses; the expected completion date is late June 2022, and I’m looking forward to enjoying it!
