Register for news updatesPotential progress towards the Kerang to Koondrook Rail Trail
Gannawarra Shire Council in Victoria has recently released its Walking and Cycling Strategy which includes the commitment to continue to plan and deliver a 22 km walking/riding trail that will follow parts of the former Kerang-Koondrook Tramways route. This trail may also in time connect with the proposed Lake Charm Eco-Trail.
In 2021 the Victorian Government awarded Gannawarra Council $500k to start the planning and design for the trail.
One of the key strategic actions within the newly released strategy includes “continue to progress with the development of a recreational trail along the old railway between Kerang and Koondrook”
More specific actions directly from page 20 of the document are as follows:
- Continue to support the link from Kerang to Koondrook utilising the old tramway which recently received funding for detailed design in 2022
- Enhance existing trails and develop new trails where possible in surrounding areas. Ensure that these trails are appealing to the anticipated visitors associated with the Kerang to Koondrook Rail Trail.
- At the appropriate point of the progression of the Rail Trail project, develop trailhead infrastructure at Kerang and Koondrook, to provide information about the trail, other trail experiences and promote connectivity to the town centre.
The local community have contributed to the strategic plan through in-person workshops, on site meetings and an online survey. The Gannawarra Council look forward to working with state and federal governments to obtain further support to act upon the actions within the document.
