Register for news updatesProject Launches to Find Rail Trail Biodiversity Hotspots
South Gippsland Landcare Network is undertaking a project to identify biodiversity ‘hotspots’ along Victoria’s Great Southern Rail Trail (GSRT). This information will be used to plan restoration projects with the 6 Landcare groups who cover the 100+ km-long rail trail.
Rail trails have enormous potential to preserve nature and provide safe habitat for local flora and fauna. “This project will show where the best locations are along the GSRT for maximising our volunteer efforts to help biodiversity, be it for threatened species or good quality habitat,” says Landcare Facilitator, Nick Stephens.
The restoration projects will also help engage the community in rail trail-related activities. “The project will provide some direction for the 6 Landcare groups, and council, who are the official caretakers of the trail” says Nick. He also hopes to engage with more users of the GSRT to increase the number of people involved.
