Register for news updatesProposed improvement to northern end of Mike Turtur Bikeway
The Mike Turtur Bikeway extends from the City of Adelaide Parklands Trail at South Tce to the coastal suburb of Glenelg, a distance of 9 km. The northern end of this railside trail includes a difficult 285 m of shared path sandwiched between the Glenelg tram line and King William Rd. The path, which varies in width from 2.5 m to 4 m, has non-standard crossing points and includes a bus stop and shelter. It has 850 bicycle movements and 1650 pedestrian ones daily.
The City of Unley has adopted a detailed design for this section which will include:
- A 4 m wide, northbound shared path
- A 1.5 m wide, southbound on-road bike lane with 0.5 m buffers
- Two additional pedestrian crossing spots and improved bike crossing points
- Relocation of the bus stop and shelter further south
- 175m2 of additional landscaping and 41 new trees which will separate the northbound shared path from King William Rd traffic.
Once city-bound cyclists reach Greenhill Rd, they will be able to cross at the traffic lights and then enter the Adelaide Parklands Trail network to reach the CBD.
The project is expected to cost $3.67 million and will be undertaken once government funding has been secured.
