Rail trail motion passed by Byron Bay Council for next section of Northern Rivers Rail Trail
A motion for supporting a rail trail through Byron Shire was passed by Byron Bay Council — it is a wonderful outcome for all rail trails in NSW facing delays and other difficulties from supporters seeking to reinstate long disused railway lines.
We believe the vote was 6/3 and the debate was robust to say the least. The Mayor, who was previously strongly opposed to the rail trail, gave a superb speech at the end of the debate.
The transcript of his speech should be circulated because it is a template for every Council in NSW planning a trail rail where an unviable railway proposal is in play.

Let’s hope the Cooma Council reads the words of the Byron Bay Mayor rather than wasting precious time pursuing a similarly unrealistic dream of reviving heavy rail on that magnificent stretch of Monaro plains.

Kudos to the Mayor for recognising the widespread benefits that the rail trail will bring to the Byron Shire.
