The dedicated Save the Snowy Rail Bridge team took time out from their work to dress up for the Snowy Steampunk Soiree fundraiser on 18 July. This twilight event, part of East Gippsland Winter Festival, was held to “celebrate the new life of this grand historic structure in vintage-industrial style”.
Stage 1 of restoration works on this 770m-long historic bridge are now complete. Along with major stabilisation and repair work, public access is now available at both ends via sections of new decking. For the first time in many decades, visitors can walk or ride on the bridge.
The eastern end carpark features interpretive panels woven together with an Emu Wren (Yeerung) theme. The same end of the bridge has a striking red entry colonnade, inspired by the 20m-long VFTY wagons once used on the Orbost line. Ten storyboards share the history and inform visitors, who can also use the recycled bridge timber seating.
The western end features picnic areas, the scenic Snowy Floodplain Lookout, an innovative under-bridge-walk and access to the Old Coach Road and the East Gippsland Rail Trail.
Funds raised from the Snowy Steampunk Soiree support maintenance and restoration of the bridge.
