City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Des Hudson officially opened The Bunny Trail on Tuesday 24 October. The “Bunny Trail” provides a new route between Mt Clear and Ballarat along sections of the old Ballarat to Buninyong Railway. It connects with the Eureka section which runs from Eureka St under Victoria St in Ballarat East to make a continuous 6.75km long trail from Mt Clear to Ballarat Station. Using the trail map, cyclists and walkers can enjoy a 13.5km loop by following the Bunny Trail and the Canadian Creek Trail. Plans are afoot to install directional and interpretative signage.
The opening celebrated the trail’s new off-road section through the Recreation Road Bushland Reserve in Recreation Rd, Mt Clear, providing access to the Woowookarung Regional Park. Local community group Friends of the Canadian Corridor (FoCC) were instrumental in the trail’s establishment with vital support from the City of Ballarat, Community Bank Buninyong, Regional Development Victoria and many other parties.
In 2019, the land at 55 Recreation Rd was owned by the Victorian Government but was up for sale. The FoCC proposed a rail trail on the old remnant rail embankment. An adjoining landowner very generously donated access to her land for the connecting easement and the City of Ballarat purchased remaining land from the state.
Hundreds of hours of volunteer labour were given over many working bees, to clear, prepare and establish the new section. Specialised volunteer work included ecological, engineering, fencing, surveying and legal advice. Mt Clear College “Compass Award” students cleared remnant pine saplings and planted over 300 grasses and shrubs.
The trail works were project managed by the FoCC with the project cost to date being over $50,000.
